ICANN Unveils ‘ICANN for Beginners’ Section on the Information Transparency Platform

8 December 2022
By

I am pleased to announce the debut of the "ICANN for Beginners" section on icann.org. Developed in line with the standards of the Information Transparency Platform (ITP), this new section is intended to help guide newcomers to ICANN and ease the learning curve associated with joining the ICANN community.

ICANN plays a unique and critical role in ensuring that the Internet remains secure, stable, and interoperable. Its complexity can make it difficult for newcomers to know how to get involved and become active participants in the multistakeholder community. Within the Beginners section, novices can learn about the fundamentals of the Domain Name System (DNS) and ICANN's role in global Internet governance, gain insight into policy-making at ICANN, and learn about how they can get involved in the ICANN multistakeholder community.

In all, there are four new pages in the section:

ICANN for Beginners Homepage

This page provides an overview of the section's content, as well as ICANN's mission and history. From this page, users can begin their ICANN journey by clicking on links to other pages, including those devoted to ICANN's policies and initiatives, ways to get involved, training resources, and upcoming events and programs.

Courses and Learning

The Courses and Learning page is designed to give users the tools they need to acclimate to ICANN terms, processes, and procedures. This page features ICANN Learn courses designed to specifically for newcomers. In addition, this page includes links to live courses, webinars, and skill and knowledge-building workshops for beginners, which are all available both virtually and in person.

Find Your ICANN Group

Since ICANN community members come from a variety of backgrounds and locations, this new page will help newcomers find the community group(s) that they may be most interested in joining.

Programs for Professionals and Students

Anyone can get involved in ICANN, regardless of location or experience level, and ICANN has created programs for working professionals as well as students. This page includes details on those programs, which includes the Fellowship Program and NextGen@ICANN, as well as links for applying.

ICANN thrives because of the passion and capability of its community. We hope this new section allow ICANN newcomers to gain the knowledge they need to get involved and become a part of this dynamic community.

If you know anyone interested in joining the ICANN community, but unsure of how to start or where to begin, please share the link to the Beginners homepage with them. We're confident this section will point them in the right direction and help them kickstart their ICANN journey.

Meanwhile, if you'd like to learn more about the ITP and read about future updates, please visit https://www.icann.org/iti. As always, if you have any questions or comments, please direct them to the ITP team at informationtransparency@icann.org.
