Improved Public Comment Feature

During ICANN71 Prep Week, over 140 participants attended the Information Transparency Initiative (ITI) demonstration of the improved Public Comment feature. The enhancements will include a new submission process and search experience. I want to thank the community for participating in this session and for your feedback.

As promised, the ICANN organization will hold a series of training webinars outlining the new Public Comment submission process. During these sessions, our teams will provide the community with step-by-step instructions on how to draft and publish a Public Comment submission, and outline how to manage your current and past submissions. You are encouraged to ask questions throughout these webinars as we want to ensure you are well-prepared to use this improved feature.

Public Comment is a critical part of our multistakeholder model and policy development process. From your feedback, we know these improvements will make it easier to draft, publish, and track your submissions, and keep up-to-date on newly published proceedings and community submissions.

For more information on these enhancements, read my previous blog, and if you missed the ICANN71 Prep Week ITI session, you can access the recording here.

A Refreshed Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) Website

A key ITI deliverable and an essential element of user experience design is the creation of a web style guide. Our extensive ITI guide provides the rules for website components and principles, and outlines the standards for the user interface and experience for ICANN's entire ecosystem of sites. Importantly, the guide is designed to ensure users see a uniform identity, and have a consistent experience throughout ICANN's websites. It also makes it easier for developers and user experience designers to apply interface changes throughout a site, quickly and seamlessly.

Today, we are pleased to announce that components of the ITI web style guide have been applied to the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) website. Please explore the updated site and tell us what you think by emailing us at: gac-staff@icann.org.

Accessibility Improvements

We know how important accessibility is to our community and ITI follows the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2 requirements. With this refresh, the GAC site's accessibility scores (testing using Lighthouse) improved significantly. For example, the search page earned a score of 94 versus the previous design which earned an 88. The GAC homepage accessibility score jumped from the previous 84 to 100. If you want to learn more about Lighthouse and what these scores mean, please visit this resource.

ITI Progress

The underlying infrastructure of the GAC site made it a good candidate for these user interface changes. The GAC site was the first ICANN web property to use ITI's new content management system, called dotCMS. While the underlying technical foundation of the GAC site remains the same and does not yet include the integration with our document management system, the site's updated interface is a further step to improving our entire ecosystem of ICANN websites.
