At ICANN, we're committed to building a more inclusive, multilingual Internet – one where everyone can participate fully, no matter what language or script they use. As part of that mission, we're excited to share that ICANN Account now supports internationalized email addresses, also known as Email Address Internationalization (EAI).
This means that users can now sign up for and sign in to ICANN Account using email addresses in their local languages and scripts – a major step forward in making the Internet truly accessible to all.
This update supports the broader goal of Universal Acceptance (UA), a foundational requirement for a multilingual Internet. UA ensures that all valid domain names and email addresses – regardless of script, language, or character length – are recognized and supported by all Internet-enabled applications, devices, and systems.
With EAI now enabled in ICANN Account, our focus will shift to integrating EAI support within the applications served under ICANN Account and working with third-party software vendors to adopt UA and EAI standards. This kind of collaboration is critical to achieving a truly multilingual and accessible digital world.
What Is ICANN Account?
ICANN Account is a centralized user portal provided by ICANN. It allows individuals and organizations to interact with ICANN services and applications.
What Is Email Address Internationalization?
EAI allows email addresses to contain non-ASCII characters, including those used in scripts such as Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, Devanagari, and others. For example, email addresses like उपयोगकर्ता@डोमेन.भारत or 用户@例子.公司 are now supported in ICANN Account. This is especially important for users whose names or domains are written in non-Latin scripts.
