I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the success of the ICANN86 Policy Forum, which took place 8–11 June in Seville, Spain. In total, 1,355 people attended ICANN86 in person, including 124 first-time attendees, and 565 people participated virtually.
I am glad to report that ICANN86 led to substantial policy progress:
- The Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) Domain Name System (DNS) Abuse Mitigation Policy Development Process 1 Working Group is making great strides. The four work sessions helped advance the discussions on associated domain checks.
- The GNSO also restarted its work on the System for Standardized Access/Disclosure to Nonpublic Generic Top-Level Domain Registration Data and made strong progress during one all-day workshop and three additional work sessions.
- The Address Supporting Organization Address Council finished developing the third draft of the Regional Internet Registries Governance Document during 15 work sessions.
ICANN86 was also notable for the deep sense of community on display throughout the four days in Seville.
- The Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) community came together to thank and celebrate Bart Boswinkel, a founding member and long-time staff support leader, on his upcoming retirement.
- The entire ICANN community shared fond memories and celebrated the accomplishments of the late ICANN Board member, Alan Barrett.
- Witnessing our community bonding and enjoying each other's company at the nightly networking receptions was truly wonderful.
And thanks to the following agenda items, the Policy Forum once again served as a knowledge sharing and learning hub for all of us, including:
- ccNSO Tech Day
- ccNSO sessions on resilience
- Lightning talks hosted by the Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC)
- Domain Name System Security Extensions and Security Workshop hosted by SSAC
- NextGen presentations
I was happy for the opportunity to hear from ICANN community members from across the region and the world, especially the Fellows and newcomers to ICANN. ICANN86 participants hailed from 123 countries and territories, and all regions were represented. Here is the regional breakdown of the in-person attendees:
- Africa – 91 (6.7 percent)
- Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands – 218 (16.1 percent)
- Europe – 605 (44.6 percent)
- Latin America and the Caribbean – 86 (6.3 percent)
- North America – 355 (26.2 percent)
Detailed statistics will be available in the ICANN86 By the Numbers Report to be published in the coming weeks. If you missed anything during the meeting, please visit the ICANN86 website for session recordings and transcripts.
