An Update From The 2020 Nominating Committee

6 May 2020
By Jay Sudowski

The 2020 Nominating Committee (NomCom) continues its work to find the most qualified candidates for open ICANN leadership positions. While the COVID-19 pandemic has posed unique challenges, it is important that you know our efforts are proceeding. We are working closely with the ICANN Board and organization (org) to mitigate any issues that arise as a result of the restrictions put in place to deal with the coronavirus.

Selection Process Update

The 2020 NomCom met for the first time in Montréal during ICANN66, where we discussed the selection process for this NomCom cycle. We have been working on the open seats for the ICANN Board and I'm pleased to report that we have narrowed down the applicant pool to a number of excellent candidates. In addition to our ICANN Board recruitment efforts, we soon will share the status of our search for members of the Public Technical Identifiers (PTI) Board, the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) Council, the Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) Council, and the At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC).

NomCom Thanks ICANN Board and org For Its Ongoing Support

The NomCom has faced a number of challenges as a result of the COVID-19 situation. We are happy to report that an ad-hoc group consisting of senior org leadership, non-NomCom appointed Board members, and NomCom leadership has been formed to address these challenges, and we are receiving solid support from both the Board and org to help us move forward with our work.

Next Steps

The NomCom had planned to meet in person at ICANN68 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Now that ICANN68 will be held as a Virtual Policy Forum, we are working with the org to determine the most productive way to meet and contribute. We do plan to hold a face-to-face meeting as soon as it is safe and travel restrictions are lifted.

The pandemic has changed how we all work, and NomCom is no exception. These conditions may require us to revise our timeline, but we are committed to continuing our work with and for the ICANN community.

If you would like more information on the leadership position openings, our timeline, or want to learn more about the NomCom, please visit the NomCom 2020 page. We'll continue to communicate with you about our progress on the selection process. Until then, on behalf of the 2020 NomCom, stay healthy and safe.
