• Name:
Mohibul Mahmud
• Affiliation and current position:
I work at Microsoft as a Cloud Engineer but I'm
applying on my personal capacity
• Relevant qualifications:
I have over 15 years of experience in Internet infrastructure and cybersecurity,
with a strong focus on DNS operations, network engineering, and system
observability.
Earlier in my career, I worked as a Network and DNS Administrator at a major
ISP in Bangladesh, where I was responsible for BGP routing, DNSSEC
deployment, and managing recursive and authoritative DNS servers using BIND.
I was actively involved in ensuring high availability and security of DNS services
for a large user base.
Currently, I work at Microsoft as a Cloud and Observability Engineer, where I
support Azure customers with large-scale monitoring, logging, and telemetry. My
focus includes root cause analysis, threat detection, and incident response
across complex, hybrid environments. I regularly engage with DNS-related
performance and diagnostic challenges in the cloud.
I hold certifications and hands-on expertise in cloud security, DevOps, and
infrastructure reliability, and I’ve also contributed to technical documentation and
knowledge-sharing initiatives, including a community-led project to translate
Internet governance material into Bengali for accessibility.
Through my participation in ICANN82, ARIN Fellowship, and the Virtual School of
Internet Governance (VSIG), I have actively engaged with the Internet
governance community and understand the importance of collaborative,
technically grounded policymaking.
This combination of hands-on DNS experience, cloud-scale observability, and
active governance participation equips me to contribute meaningfully to RSSAC’s
mission of enhancing root server system stability and security.
• Motivation for Membership in the RSSAC Caucus:
My motivation to join the RSSAC Caucus stems from a long-standing commitment to
strengthening the resilience, security, and operational stability of the Internet’s core
infrastructure. Having worked for over a decade as a Network and DNS Administrator in
the ISP industry, and now serving as a Cloud and Observability Engineer at Microsoft, I’ve
seen firsthand how critical the root server system is to global Internet functionality.
Participating in ICANN82 as a Fellow deepened my understanding of RSSAC’s vital role
and highlighted how my technical background aligns with its mission. I am particularly
interested in contributing to discussions and projects related to DNS performance,
measurement, resiliency, and observability—areas where I bring practical experience and
insight.
I see RSSAC as a unique space where technical expertise meets global impact. Joining
the Caucus would allow me to collaborate with like-minded experts, contribute to research
and advisory work, and help shape recommendations that enhance the DNS root system.
I’m also committed to supporting broader knowledge-sharing efforts within the
community and mentoring future contributors from underrepresented regions.
Ultimately, I hope to contribute meaningfully to RSSAC’s work while continuing to learn
from its rich expertise and collaborative environment.
• Indication of Availability:
I am available to actively participate in RSSAC Caucus activities, including virtual
meetings, working group discussions, and review of drafts or research materials.
I can typically commit 5–10 hours per month, with flexibility to adjust based on
project needs and timelines. I am based in Canada (Eastern Time) and can
accommodate meetings scheduled in global time zones. I’m also available to
contribute asynchronously through email or collaboration platforms when
needed.
• Formal Roles and Interests in the Work of RSSAC:
While I do not currently hold a formal role within ICANN or RSSAC, I have
actively participated in the ICANN82 Fellowship Program, where I was introduced
to various community structures, including RSSAC. I am also an ARIN 52 Fellow
and contribute to Internet governance discussions through the Virtual School of
Internet Governance (VSIG), where I help improve accessibility by translating
course materials.
My primary interest in the work of RSSAC stems from over 15 years of
experience in Internet infrastructure and cybersecurity, including more than a
decade as a Network and DNS Administrator in the ISP sector. I currently work at
Microsoft, focusing on cloud operations, observability, and secure infrastructure
monitoring. These experiences have strengthened my interest in the stability,
performance, and resilience of the root server system.
I am particularly interested in contributing to initiatives that align with monitoring,
root service performance, and operational best practices. I look forward to
learning from the RSSAC community and applying my technical background to
support the security and stability of the DNS root system.
