Motivation
I am interested in supporting and extending my work towards security and availability of Root Servers. I am involved in increasing the number of instances in India and NIXI has sponsored three Root Servers, at Mumbai (I Root) Delhi (K Root) and Chennai (F Root). I am motivated to contribute towards RSSAC activities to get more insight into Root server operations and like to use the experience and contribute in working parties working on the operations and outreach.

Name: John Crain

Motivation: I am interested in helping to improve the stability and resiliency in all areas of the Internet's Identifier systems and have a keen interest in the DNS specifically. I am very keen to see the operations of the higher levels of the DNS hierarchy become more transparent through enabling others to better understand the functioning of these systems. My belief is that RSSAC should be a key enabler in that area.

Indication of availability, not a formal commitment: I can work on RSSAC documents for about 7 hours per month in addition to the time I spend for formal RSSAC business. I schedule work with about 6 weeks planning horizon.

Working as a DNS operator and engineer for the past 20 years. I am currently DNS Subject Matter Expert supporting Quotient Inc. with some taskings directly related to the G root server. While I have attended many IETFs and DNS-OARCs my work does not always permit me to be front and center so my name may not be as wide spread. I started in DNS back with BIND 4 when DNS administration was mostly a side task of UNIX administrators. Through multiple jobs I ended up working with dedicated focus on DNS in 2002. I was involved with some of the early G root anycast efforts and have built out numerous DNS security solutions. During DNSSEC development, I was a part of test labs and early evaluation of the RFCs. I’ve monitored the old dnsext and current dnsop mailing lists for many years.

Recently I am heavily involved in monitoring DNS systems from different perspectives and via different data sources to provide visualization of problems within the DNS infrastructure. In addition, I package custom BIND builds in various package formats.

Motivation
Continued interest in the DNS protocol and operations. Finding a useful outlet to some of my knowledge of my long history of DNS.

Availability
I can spend a few hours a month on RSSAC documents. I plan to be at most upcoming DNS-OARCs. I would mostly plan to dial into RSSAC meetings unless they line up with other conferences.

My current job involves DNS from registry to registrar to registrant/auth to recursive DNS. Many issues related to root server operations have large overlap with these areas. I think that my operations background could be helpful, and I want to stay current with the work and research the root operator community is doing.

I regularly attend at least 1-2 ICANNs, 2-3 IETFs and 1 OARC meeting per year and my employer supports this involvement. I am also regularly on conference calls in support of various volunteer work I do.
