Update From the ICANN Board’s CEO Search Committee

13 April 2023
By Chris Chapman

As Chair of the ICANN Board's CEO Search Committee, I wanted to share an update on the search for ICANN's next leader.

The Board established the Search Committee to put together, for the full Board to consider, a viable list of candidates to be ICANN's next President and CEO. The committee's immediate task is to create a candidate profile, which will be published before ICANN77 in June and presented during the meeting.

To gather input from the ICANN Community and the broader Internet ecosystem, the Search Committee has planned a series of Board Listening Sessions, the first of which took place last month during ICANN76. We have scheduled the next Listening Session with the Community on 16 May at 14:00–15:30 Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) via Zoom. Please visit the Search Committee page for more information and to register.

The Search Committee is seeking the Community's input on ICANN's future, the challenges and opportunities ahead, and what qualifications, characteristics, and qualities we need in our next leader. We encourage feedback that is succinct, positive, focused on describing what is desired and, above all, forward-looking.

During our April Board Workshop in Brussels, the Board will hold separate Listening Sessions with the Address Supporting Organization (ASO), the At-Large Advisory Committee (ALAC), the Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) Council, the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) Council, the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC), and the Root Server System Advisory Committee (RSSAC). We will also hold Listening Sessions with former ICANN Board members; former ICANN Board Chairs; and representatives from the Internet Society (ISOC) and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).

27-Apr-23 28-Apr-23
Group Session Time (UTC) Group Session Time (UTC)
GAC 12:15–13:00 ccNSO 12:00–12:45
ALAC 13:05–13:50 RSSAC 12:50–13:35
GNSO 13:55–14:40 ISOC and IETF 13:50–14:35
ASO 14:55–15:40 Former Board Chairs (closed) 14:40–15:25
Former Board Members (closed) 15:45–16:30

The Search Committee has also scheduled a session with the Security and Stability Advisory Committee on 9 May at 19:00–19:45 UTC.

For these sessions, we have asked the leaders of each Supporting Organization and Advisory Committee to gather input from their membership in advance, and then share the compiled input with the Board during the session. Therefore, only the leaders are invited to actively participate in the sessions, but anyone is welcome to join the sessions as an observer.

In addition, the committee held a Listening Session with ICANN organization staff on 11 April, and we have another one scheduled for 11 May. We will also hold a Listening Session with ICANN organization executives on 13 April.

We know that the times of these Listening Sessions may not be convenient for everyone, so we appreciate your understanding and participation. You may also share your views with the Search Committee at any time by emailing us at ceosearch2023@icann.org.

On behalf of the Search Committee, we very much look forward to hearing from you in the coming weeks.
