2026 Round Progress Continues

25 February 2026

Over the past week, ICANN continued to progress on the roadmap to opening the application window for new generic top-level domains (gTLD).

Yesterday, the ICANN organization (org) published details on the extensive testing that ICANN has been conducting on the TLD Application Management System, known as TAMS. As we have said, ICANN is committed to launching a secure and user-friendly system for all users; we will not open the application window unless we are confident that we can provide that.

Meanwhile, the org is making impressive progress on the implementation of the overall program. I invite you to peruse the ICANN85 New gTLD Program Status Update, which we have prepared for the ICANN Board in advance of the upcoming Public Meeting.

I hope this brief gives you insight and perhaps sparks ideas and questions that you can bring to the meeting in Mumbai. There will be several 2026 Round sessions, designed to prepare applicants. You can find them and the recordings of today's 2026 Round and Universal Acceptance Prep Week sessions on the ICANN85 schedule website.

I also encourage you to view the numerous Frequently Asked Questions that are available on the 2026 Round website.

Stay tuned for more news as we continue the work of opening the 2026 Round!
