ICANN Invites Applications for Asia Pacific Internet Governance Academy 2022

12 May 2022

Today, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that the application window for the Asia Pacific Internet Governance Academy (APIGA) 2022 opens on 14 May 2022 00:00 (UTC+9). Hosted by ICANN and the Korea Internet and Security Agency (KISA), the Asia Pacific Internet Governance Academy will be held from 16 to 20 August 2022 in Seoul or Jeju, Republic of Korea. Details about and application information for APIGA 2022 can be found on the APIGA 2022 website.

What is APIGA?

Launched in 2016, APIGA is a 5-day capacity development workshop geared towards youths in the Asia Pacific (APAC) region.

Through the program, participants will build a solid foundation in Internet Governance (IG) fundamentals. This includes guided pathways to continue participating in the IG space including at ICANN, the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC), the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the Internet Society (ISOC) and various other IG forums.

Participants will learn via immersive, hands-on sessions with dedicated mentoring by regional industry experts. They will also build a strong network with peers, APIGA alumni, leading APAC Internet organizations and key APAC community leaders.

Past data shows that one in four APIGA alumni continue to participate in Internet governance fora locally, regionally and globally.

Health and safety

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the health and safety of all participants and staff remain a key priority for ICANN and KISA. As the local host, KISA will confirm the event venue closer to the event dates to ensure that it meets the necessary health and safety measures. As an in-person event, all participants and staff will be required to follow the COVID-19 health and safety rules mandated for the event. ICANN and KISA are also closely monitoring relevant national and international public health guidance regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. As the pandemic situation remains fluid, the dates of the event could be subject to change should the need arise.

Who can apply?

Individuals from the APAC region between the age of 18 and 35 interested in Internet governance issues are welcome to apply. Applications are accepted until Sunday, 5 June 2022 23:59 Korea Standard Time (UTC+9) / 14:59 UTC. For more information about APIGA and to apply, please visit the APIGA 2022 website.

ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
