ICANN Board Resolves on ODP for the Subsequent Procedures Final Report Outputs

14 September 2021

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) today announced a Board decision that directs the ICANN organization's President and CEO to conduct an Operational Design Phase (ODP) assessment of the recommendations contained in the Final Report of the New Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) Subsequent Procedures Policy Development Process.

In its 12 September 2021 resolution, the ICANN Board directed the ICANN President and CEO to organize the resources required to begin work on the ODP, and to advise the Board when the work of the ODP is initiated within the organization (org). ICANN will host a public webinar on 28 September 2021 at 20:00 Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) to provide additional information on the New gTLD Subsequent Procedures ODP.

ICANN org will conduct the ODP by addressing the questions outlined in the New gTLD Subsequent Procedures Operational Design Phase Scoping Document provided by the ICANN Board as part of its resolution and direction. The output of the ODP is an Operational Design Assessment (ODA), which the ICANN Board has requested be delivered within 10 months from the date of initiation, provided that there are no unforeseen matters that could affect the timeline.

The ODP is a formal process where ICANN org, as part of Its usual work to prepare the ICANN Board for its consideration of policy recommendations and as outlined in the Consensus Policy Implementation Framework, provides the ICANN Board with relevant materials to facilitate the Board's determination whether the recommendations are in the best interest of the ICANN community or ICANN. To learn more about the ODP process, please visit the dedicated ODP webpage available here.

The Operational Design Phase is a transparent process. ICANN org will provide regular updates and engage with the ICANN community and stakeholders throughout the course of the ODP. This will ensure visibility into how the ICANN org is approaching its operational analysis throughout the ODP, and also enable the community to ask questions and provide feedback along the way. ICANN org has launched a dedicated webpage for announcements, blogs, updates, and all other information related to the ODP. To learn more about the New gTLD Subsequent Procedures ODP or to submit feedback, please visit the dedicated New gTLD Subsequent Procedures webpage.

We invite the community to register for the New gTLD Subsequent Procedures ODP public webinar scheduled for 28 September at 20:00 UTC.

About ICANN

ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
