In accordance with Article XI, Section 2 of the Bylaws, the role of the Root Server System Advisory Committee ("RSSAC") is to advise the Board about the operation of the root name servers of the domain name system. The RSSAC considers and provides advice on the operational requirements of root name servers, including host hardware capacities, operating systems and name server software versions, network connectivity and physical environment. The RSSAC also examines and advises on the security aspects of the root name server system, as well as reviews the number, location, and distribution of root name servers considering the total system performance, robustness, and reliability.

|January 2011||The Board approves the RSSAC review WG final report: implementation steps [PDF, 448 KB] - http://www.icann.org/en/groups/board/documents/resolutions-25jan11-en.htm#1.j and instructs the SIC, in coordination with staff, to provide the Board with a final implementation plan to address the conclusions and recommendations in the final reports of the RSSAC review Working Group.

|November 2008||The appointed consulting firm – Westlake Consulting Limited – starts its assignment at the Cairo meeting where input is received from members of the community.
In addition to the ICANN Summit, the consultants are also to attend the IETF meeting in Minneapolis to observe the RSSAC procedures and interview RSSAC members.
