Root Server System Advisory Committee (RSSAC) Review


In accordance with Article XI, Section 2 of the Bylaws, the role of the Root Server System Advisory Committee ("RSSAC") is to advise the Board about the operation of the root name servers of the domain name system. The RSSAC considers and provides advice on the operational requirements of root name servers, including host hardware capacities, operating systems and name server software versions, network connectivity and physical environment. The RSSAC also examines and advises on the security aspects of the root name server system, as well as reviews the number, location, and distribution of root name servers considering the total system performance, robustness, and reliability.

Status: Implementation Phase

April 2013 The Board adopts the proposed changes to Article XI, Section 2.3 of th ICANN Bylaws that are necessary to modify the charter for the RSSAC in line with the recommendations arising out of the organizational review of the RSSAC.
January 2011 The Board approves the RSSAC review WG final report: implementation steps [PDF, 448 KB] - and instructs the SIC, in coordination with staff, to provide the Board with a final implementation plan to address the conclusions and recommendations in the final reports of the RSSAC review Working Group.
August 2010 The Board Accepts the RSSAC Review Working Group report, dissolves the WG and asks the Board Structural Improvements Committee to recommend implementation activities. See

No input was provided in response to the draft WG report, with the exception of five off-topic entries. See summary of comments.

In consideration of the response and following WG discussion, the RSSAC Review WG decides to release the draft document materially unchanged as the final RSSAC review WG report (English [PDF, 235 KB]).

April 2010

The RSSAC Working Group composed of:

November 2008 The appointed consulting firm – Westlake Consulting Limited – starts its assignment at the Cairo meeting where input is received from members of the community.

In addition to the ICANN Summit, the consultants are also to attend the IETF meeting in Minneapolis to observe the RSSAC procedures and interview RSSAC members.
July 2008 Terms of Reference (ToR) and a Request for Proposals (RfP) are issued.
