At its Board meeting in Rome, ICANN announced the appointment of Jean-Jacques Damlamian as Chair of the 2004 Nominating Committee. The Nominating Committee is an important part of ICANN's commitment to attract distinguished international participants to service on ICANN's Board of Directors, Supporting Organization Councils, and the Interim At Large Advisory Committee. By providing a complementary pathway to the representation-based selections of the Supporting Organizations, the Committee plays a key role in the ICANN structure of accountability and transparency, and supports ICANN's public interest orientation.

The ICANN Nominating Committee is responsible for the selection of: all ICANN Directors, except the President and those Directors selected by ICANN's Supporting Organizations; a portion of the Supporting Organization Councils; and a portion of the Interim At Large Advisory Committee. The individuals selected by the 2004 Nominating Committee will take their seats at the conclusion of the 2004 ICANN Annual Meeting, held in the last quarter of the calendar year.

Charged to act only on behalf of the interests of the global Internet community, and to carry no personal commitments to particular individuals, organizations, or commercial objectives, the Committee members operate within the scope of the ICANN mission and the responsibilities assigned to them by the ICANN Bylaws. The Committee's selections are final, requiring no further approval or ratification.

ICANN is fortunate to be able to draw on a leader with substantial technical and international experience to serve as the 2004 Nominating Committee Chair.

Jean-Jacques Damlamian, 62, is Special Advisor to the CEO of France Telecom. He had been from January 2003 until March 2004 Executive Vice-President of France Telecom in charge of the Technology and Innovation Group. Previously, he had been Executive Vice-President in charge of the Development Division from January 1996. From 1992 to 1996, Mr. Damlamian served as Marketing and Sales Director for the France Telecom Group. From 1991 to 1992, he was the head of France Telecom's International and Industrial Affairs department, and from 1988 through 1991 he was responsible for Mobile Services.

Mr. Damlamian joined France Telecom in 1967 and, until 1988, held various positions (successively in research and development, network operations, overseas networks and as personal assistant to the Chief Executive Officer).

Mr. Damlamian is a recipient of the French Legion of Honour, the National Merit Order and the "Palmes Académiques". He is a graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications.

The work of the 2004 Nominating Committee begins today when the Chair sends his formal invitation to the ICANN Supporting Organizations and Advisory Committees to name their Delegates and Liaisons to serve on the Nominating Committee. Once the Committee is formed, further information, including a Timetable, Committee Procedures, and ways for the Internet community to contribute to its work, will begin to be published on its webpage on the ICANN website http://www.icann.org.
