Summary of Submission

This submission supports the publication and implementation of the new Reference LGR for the Javanese script and the updated Reference LGR for the Arabic script, particularly the addition of two characters to support the Pegon writing system in Indonesia. These updates are important for strengthening linguistic diversity, cultural preservation, and local identity in the domain name system.

The Javanese script is an important part of Indonesia’s linguistic and cultural heritage and remains relevant for education, cultural expression, local identity, and digital communication. Its inclusion in the Reference LGR framework supports a more multilingual and inclusive Internet, allowing communities to use their own script as part of domain-name identity.

This submission also supports the update to the Arabic script Reference LGR to better accommodate Pegon, an Arabic-based writing tradition used in Indonesia for local languages and religious, educational, and cultural expression. This update helps recognize the practical and cultural importance of Pegon and improves representation for Indonesian language communities in Internationalized Domain Names.

I welcome ICANN’s work to develop and update these Reference LGRs in consultation with relevant script and language communities. Standardized, machine-readable LGRs can help registries and users apply clearer rules for valid labels, variant handling, and consistent implementation, while supporting the security, stability, and interoperability of the DNS.

I recommend that ICANN proceed with the new Javanese script Reference LGR and the updated Arabic script Reference LGR after considering public comments, and continue engaging script experts, language communities, registries, and local stakeholders during implementation.
