Public Comment is a vital part of our multistakeholder model. It provides a mechanism for stakeholders to have their opinions and recommendations formally and publicly documented. It is an opportunity for the ICANN community to effect change and improve policies and operations.
My comments
Two-year terms (recommendation 7): “NomCom members, except for leadership positions, should serve two-year terms, and be limited to a maximum of two terms.”
Response
As a member of ATLARGE it has been common practice that we have supported those candidates to run for the two years( one year intervals) as it takes a year to understand the process and that investment is important and should be encouraged for that individual to do two subsequent years. The current situation with one year terms undermines the invested time by that indvidual and I endorse the idea of a two year term.
All voting members (recommendation 9): “All NomCom members should be fully participating and voting members, except for NomCom leadership.”
Response
This is logical and a mystery why we had non voting members
Standing Committee (recommendation 24): “An empowered body of current and former NomCom members should be formed to ensure greater continuity across NomComs, and in particular, to recommend and assist in implementing improvements to NomCom operations.”
Response
This is an excellent idea of a body of current and past Nomcom members who support the efforts via marketing and attendance at the NOMCOM information session. Its been sad to see show low attendance at the NOMCOM information meeting with very few former NOMCOM people at these meetings. NOMCOM needs to lean on all its supporters to help market to disadvantaged groups about the opportunities of leadership at ICANN
Unaffiliated Board Directors (recommendation 27): “Provide clarity on desire for independent directors and designate three specific seats for ‘Unaffiliated’ Directors.”
Response
This is unclear to me on the meaning and role of the unaffiliated board directors
The above comments are simple and logical recommendations to improve the NOMCOM
