On 22-23 January 2009, ICANN hosted its European registry/registrar regional gathering in Rome, Italy. The regional gathering model was introduced as a means to broaden participation in the ICANN process by the growing number of registrars and to create an opportunity for ICANN staff to provide updates on issues that affect gTLD registries and ICANN-accredited registrars such as contractual compliance, GNSO policy activities and registrant protection initiatives.  In the interest of transparency, the presentations are being made public and this will become regular practice.
