It is that time again. ICANN 49 in Singapore is around the corner. The Policy Development team is working diligently to update our ICANN Community on the progress of the bottom-up, consensus-driven working groups across the ICANN Supporting Organizations and Advisory Committees.

To this end, the Policy Development team will be hosting the Pre-Singapore Policy Update Webinar on Thursday 13 March. There are two 90-minute sessions to allow for greater participation around the world: 12:00 UTC and 19:00 UTC. The webinar includes a moderated question and answer session with our policy experts.

As we know, a primary role of ICANN is to coordinate policy development related to the global Internet’s systems of unique identifiers. We have open and transparent policy development mechanisms to promote well-informed decisions based on expert advice from a diversity of views from our stakeholders. The ICANN Community works to improve and streamline these mechanisms so as many global stakeholders as possible can participate and have their voices heard. This bottom up, multistakeholder, consensus approach results in recommendations for the domain name system (DNS) that are fair, effective, and carefully considered, preserving and enhancing the security, stability and resiliency of the Internet.

Our 13 March webinar provides us with another opportunity to update everyone on various policy development processes currently underway in the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO), such as Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy Part D, Translation and Transliteration of Contact Information, Privacy and Proxy Services Accreditation Issues, among others. The briefing on the Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) will include an update on cross-community efforts to develop a Framework of the Use of Country and Territory Names as Top-Level Domains. We will also provide an overview of planned Address Supporting Organization (ASO) and numbering community activities for ICANN 49.

The Root Server System Advisory Committee (RSSAC) will be convening for the first time at an ICANN meeting since 1999. The briefing during the webinar will provide an update on its ongoing restructuring and further details for opportunities to engage with root server operators at ICANN 49. The Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC) recently published two advisories, which will be highlighted during the webinar as well. Finally, the GAC and At-Large updates will give more detail on the various policy activities of these two key advisory committees.

On behalf of the ICANN Policy Development team, I invite all to join our Pre-Singapore Policy Update Webinar and learn more about policy development at ICANN. Please RSVP to gnso.secretariat@gnso.icann.org as soon as possible, indicating your preferred session, to receive participation details.
