ICANN Seeks Input on Name Collision Procedure Documentation

29 January 2026

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is seeking public comment on the Name Collision Procedure Documentation for the New Generic Top-Level Domains Program 2026 Round.

Each applied-for string, including variant strings, in the 2026 Round will be subject to name collision assessments to identify strings that present a high risk of causing harmful name collisions. If unmitigated, name collisions are likely to result in severe adverse consequences for stakeholders.

The public comments on the Name Collision Procedure Documentation and Impact-Based Classification Model will enable ICANN org to assess all relevant issues related to the processes.

About ICANN

ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
