ICANN Registration Data Policy Now In Effect for Contracted Parties

21 August 2025

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) announced that today marks the effective date of the Registration Data Policy for generic top-level domain registry operators and ICANN-accredited registrars (contracted parties). This milestone concludes a year-long transition period that took place from 21 August 2024 through 20 August 2025, during which contracted parties prepared to implement new requirements for processing domain name registration data.

The Registration Data Policy is a consensus policy based on recommendations made by the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO). The new policy replaces the Interim Registration Data Policy, providing a consistent framework for how domain name registration data is managed in line with privacy regulations. The new policy implements a total of 34 policy recommendations and includes updates to 20 impacted policies and procedures, as well as the Registration Data Access Protocol Profile.

ICANN thanks the multistakeholder community for its collaboration, dedication, and expertise in helping to shape a policy that balances privacy safeguards with reliable data management. This collective effort involved significant time and resources to develop policy recommendations and identify and address implementation challenges. In preparation for the policy's effective date, contracted parties have updated their systems and processes to ensure they are ready for the successful implementation of the new policy.

About ICANN

ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
