ICANN Address Supporting Organization Seeks Input on New RIR Governance Document

28 August 2025

The ICANN Address Supporting Organization Address Council (ASO AC) reviewed community feedback on the first Governance Document for the Recognition, Maintenance, and Derecognition of Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) and incorporated it in a new draft. The ASO AC is now seeking community feedback on the second draft, entitled "Governance Document for the Recognition, Operation, and Derecognition of Regional Internet Registries."

The proposed RIR Governance Document sets forth a proposal on:

  • Rules and criteria for recognizing new RIRs
  • Operating obligations and requirements of RIRs
  • Rules and criteria for derecognizing RIRs

If adopted by ICANN and the RIRs, the RIR Governance Document would supersede and replace the ICP-2.

About ICANN

ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
