I have reviewed the SSE Data overview with great interest. I want to thank ICANN and the script experts for their detailed work in preparing this foundational material. To ensure the process is robust and fair, I offer the following suggestions:
1. Transparency and Predictability: I strongly encourage ICANN to make the SSE Tool and its underlying data publicly viewable or testable. From an applicant's viewpoint, the ability to proactively assess potential similarity issues before submitting applications is crucial for risk management and strategic planning. This transparency would significantly increase fairness and predictability.
2. Inclusivity and Accurate Representation: It is vital that regional and linguistic scripts, including Arabic and other related writing systems, are thoroughly reviewed by qualified local language experts. As someone with ties to communities using these scripts, I want to ensure they are accurately represented and do not face unintended disadvantages in the similarity review.
3. A Clear and Fair Appeals Process: Establishing a transparent and straightforward appeals mechanism is essential. For any applicant, the ability to challenge or clarify an SSE Panel decision is a fundamental aspect of a fair process, reinforcing accountability and building trust in the system.
4. Protecting End-User Trust: The focus on preventing visually similar strings is commendable and plays a direct role in protecting everyday internet users. This is a key pillar in maintaining overall trust in the DNS.
In conclusion, I support the proactive steps taken and believe that emphasizing transparency, inclusivity, and fairness will be key to the community's confidence and the success of the New gTLD Program - Next Round.
