Hyderabad is popular with visitors due to its rich architectural, historical, cultural and culinary offerings. During your week at ICANN57, be sure to find time for some sightseeing so you can get to know the City of Pearls. Here are 10 experiences you don’t want to miss.

  1. The Charminar, meaning “four towers,” has come to symbolize Hyderabad. Built in 1591 by sultan Mohammed Quli Qutb Shahi, the mosque commemorates the end of a terrible plague. The four ornate minarets and arches are beautifully lit at night. You can climb to the top to enjoy the view.

  2. The Laad Bazaar, across from the Charminar, is a lively market best known for the over 350 vendors selling sparkly glass bangles in every color imaginable. You can also buy jewelry, fabric, perfumes and decorative household items.

  3. The Mecca Masjid, just southwest of the Charminar, is the largest mosque in the city. Built from local granite, it takes its name from the Grand Mosque in Mecca, which was the inspiration for its design.

  4. The Chowmahalla Palace complex contains four palaces built by the Nizams starting in 1750. This palace is modeled after the Shah’s Palace in Teheran, Iran. Highlights are the clock tower and the Bara Imam, a long corridor.

  5. The Salar Jung Museum contains an extensive collection of art, antiques and decorative objects from Europe, the Middle East and Asia from the 2nd century B.C. to the early part of the 20th century.

  6. The Golconda Fort is an imposing granite fort with a circumference of more than five kilometers. The structures were fortified between the 14th and 17th centuries. Its history spans the eras of the Bahmani sultans and the Qutub Shahi kings, who used it as their main capital.

  7. Birla Mandir is a Hindu temple built of stark white marble from Rajasthan. It is appreciated for its elaborate sculptures and shrines. Nighttime illumination makes it one of the most beautiful sights in Hyderabad.

  8. Elaborate domes, arches and minarets characterize the architectural style of the Qutub Shahi Tombs. The Qutub Shahi built the tombs to house the remains of the Golconda kings.  You can also admire the landscaped gardens and exquisite stone carvings.

  9. Shilparamam covers 65 acres and was established by the government to preserve the traditional crafts of Telangana. The crafts village gives artisans a place to showcase their local crafts – including jewelry, textiles and woodworking. And tourists have a place to appreciate the cultural heritage of the region.

  10. Don’t leave Hyderabad without sampling biryani, an aromatic dish of basmati rice with fish, meat or vegetables, spiced with cardamom and cloves. While popular all over India, biryani is the signature dish of Hyderabad. These links can help you find a restaurant:

… and of course, you might want to shop for pearls while you are in Hyderabad. Make sure you do your research and choose an established, reputable jeweler.

I hope you enjoy your stay in Hyderabad – and may ICANN57 be a memorable meeting for you!
