SAC078 | Executive Summary for SSAC Advisory on Uses of the Shared Global Domain Name Space
[PDF, 183.32 KB]
This advisory highlights concerns about the coexistence of traditional DNS resolution with alternative name resolution systems that employ special-use domain names. Examples include .local, which is used by Multicast DNS (mDNS) for local network resolution and .onion, designated for use with the Tor network.
Multiple uses of the DNS carry potential security and stability risks, including name collisions. The SSAC stresses that discussions and work are ongoing in various venues to more fully define what a namespace is, and how to avoid potential side effects across the broad set of name resolution systems and expectations for their use. As such, the SSAC formed a work party to investigate the implications of this work as it pertains to the security and stability of the DNS.
