Friends:

During the recent application period for new TLDs (5 September - 2 October 2000), ICANN received several applications involving proposed TLDs intended to be used for telephony-related applications. The proposals are posted on ICANN's web site at the URLs given below:

1. .i, .idi, .iii, and .one Sarnoff Corporation, Atomic Tangerine, Inc., and NextDNS, Inc.
<http://www.icann.org/tlds/i1/>
2. .mas, .max, .mid, .mis, .mobi, .mobile, .now, and .own Nokia Corporation
<http://www.icann.org/tlds/mas1/>
3. .one Group One Registry, Inc.
<http://www.icann.org/tlds/one1/>
4. .pid DADA Spa
<http://www.icann.org/tlds/pid1/>
5. .tel Pulver, Peek, and Marschel
<http://www.icann.org/tlds/tel1/>
6. .tel Number.tel LLC
<http://www.icann.org/tlds/tel2/>
7. .tel Telnic Limited
<http://www.icann.org/tlds/tel3/>

These proposals involve various types of telephony-Internet integration, ranging from use for routing VoIP traffic (#5 and #7) to location of general Internet resources based on the resource owner's telephone number (#6). One proposal (#3) is not explicitly limited to telephony-related uses, but instead permits any number to be registered as a SLD for any purpose.

The second-level domain e164.arpa was recently established in support of ITU/IETF-IAB joint enum project. We understand that in connection with the enum project your organizations have studied the issue of consistency with the E.164 standard. ICANN would appreciate receiving any technical advice you might have on the implications of the above proposals for new TLDs.

Best regards,

Michael M. Roberts
