November will be a busy time for ICANN in Paris.

Members of the ICANN Community, the Board, and the Organization will participate in the 13th Annual Meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF). The event is hosted by the Government of France at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris from 12 to 14 November 2018, under the theme, 'Internet of Trust'.

True to the IGF's theme, this year's discussions will focus on addressing the future of the Internet by considering elements such as trust, regulation, security, stability and the role of state, institutions and non-state actors.

The IGF will provide ICANN with an opportunity for dialogue on key developments related to the progress toward a subsequent gTLD application process, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and WHOIS (which will be discussed at a workshop organized by our APNIC friends). At the event, we will have the chance to participate in bilateral discussions with a range of stakeholders from around the world.

I encourage you to attend the ICANN Open Forum where ICANN's CEO and President, Göran Marby, and ICANN's Board Chair, Cherine Chalaby, will brief participants on ICANN's current areas of work. These include, what's on ICANN's agenda, the implementation of the GDPR and the Temporary Specification, and the main issues surrounding a potential new application process for generic Top-level Domains (gTLDs). During this interactive session, IGF participants will be able to engage in an open dialogue and exchange views with ICANN's leadership. The session is scheduled for 12 November from 10:40 am to 11:40 am.

As usual, ICANN community members will participate in or have organized other workshops, forums, and sessions. For more information, see the IGF website. On Monday evening, we will co-host a reception with other partners of the Technical Community. Don't forget to visit our booth at the IGF Village.

Parallel to the IGF, there will be two other key events in Paris. First, The Paris Peace Summit, will focus this year on promoting governance solutions in five key issues: peace and security, new technologies, the environment, development, and inclusive economies. The second will be the GovTech Summit which gathers leaders and innovators to explore how new technologies can improve public services and democratic practices.

The IGF Paris meetings come at an important time in the Internet Governance debate. Currently, important discussions take place between governments at the UN in New York and at the ITU Plenipotentiary in Dubai (PP-18). Thus, the importance of the IGF in continuing the global dialogue on the development of the Internet.
We look forward to seeing you in Paris!
