We would like to invite interested members of the ICANN community to join the new Africa Strategy Working Group. ICANN's Africa Strategy is the cornerstone of all engagement efforts in the region. Prepared by the regional ICANN community, it serves as a road map for ICANN's Global Stakeholder Engagement (GSE) Africa team. Participating in groups like these helps preserve and improve our multistakeholder model, promoting inclusiveness and equality of opportunity when shaping ICANN's regional engagement strategy.
Our current Africa Strategy concludes 30 June 2020 at the end of ICANN's fiscal year 2020. Its implementation began in early 2013, then it was reviewed in 2015 and 2018.
The key objectives of the current strategy have been twofold:
- Promoting awareness and meaningful participation by Africa in ICANN and the wider Internet governance ecosystem in partnership with other I* and Af* organizations,
- Helping transform the DNS and Internet industry in Africa by facilitating capacity development and cultivating an environment for strong regional domain name industry.

During the Africa Strategy session at ICANN66 in Montreal, we discussed the need to develop a new regional strategy and ensure alignment with ICANN's Strategic Plan for FY21-25 [PDF, 2.08 MB]. The community shared their initial suggestions and expectations for this process.
We also held a webinar on 18 December 2019, where we took the community through ICANN org's Strategic Plan for FY21-25, outlining the work that will be needed, as well as the priorities and next steps for the new working group. You can access the webinar recordings in French or English.
The new Africa Strategy will take effect from 1 July 2020.
