ICANN President and CEO Shares Goals for Fiscal Year 2023

Por Göran Marby

Over the last few years, ICANN resources have been in increasingly high demand. This is a result of ongoing operational activities occurring in parallel with the development and implementation of community-led initiatives that must be conducted the same time. We have prepared for this in many ways, including making internal organizational changes, introducing new work methods, such as the Project Management Framework and operational design phase, hiring additional resources, and developing a prioritization framework.

Each year, I work with the ICANN Board and the ICANN organization (org) executive team to develop a set of goals for the new fiscal year. This year I am highlighting some of the work the org is doing to continue to improve processes and workflows, as well as our priority projects and critical management work that must be done alongside planned efforts. My objective in doing this is to give the Board and community a full view of the org's high-priority projects.

To learn more about the major work ICANN org will undertake during the year, I encourage you to read the ICANN Org FY23 Operating Plan. In it, you'll find descriptions of the operating initiatives that support the strategic objectives identified in the Strategic Plan as well as the functional activities necessary to operate the organization.

As part of our commitment to accountability and transparency, I am sharing my goals for the 2023 fiscal year (FY23), which runs from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023. I developed eight of these goals and the Board developed three of them.

Goals Developed by the President and CEO:

Goal 1. Ensure that Community Relationship Management platform features, such as Events 2.0 and ICANN Join, are deployed as planned, in accordance with relevant data protection laws.

Goal 2. Continue to engage with the Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) to improve the Policy Development Process lifecycle, from development through implementation.

Goal 3. Continue to build and implement the Coalition for Digital Africa initiative, together with local stakeholders, partners, and communities.

Goal 4. Conduct high-level stakeholder engagement in countries and regions that will most benefit from the next round of new generic top-level domains; in particular, those with non-English scripts or ASCII character sets. Create awareness of the importance of Universal Acceptance (UA) beyond the ICANN community and build an understanding of the link between UA, internationalized domain names, and the next round.

Goal 5. Develop and deploy programs to increase DNS operators' knowledge of best practices for both authoritative and recursive systems.

Goal 6. Develop an implementation framework for each of the 12 recommendations provided by the DNS Security Facilitation Initiative Technical Study Group to strengthen collaboration and communication on the security and stability issues that impact the Internet.

Goal 7. Create a consistent framework for "Enhancing the effectiveness of the multistakeholder model" to improve transparency and increase understanding.

Goal 8. Develop and propose program and project management tools to assist the Supporting Organizations and Advisory Committees in managing and planning their work in a uniform way.

Goals Developed by the ICANN Board of Directors:

Goal 9. Create a plan over the fiscal year to ensure that ICANN consistently delivers best-in-class hybrid Public Meetings that integrate the most meaningful and effective experiences for both virtual and in-person attendees.

Goal 10. Create a plan by the end of October 2022 to ensure that ICANN puts in place a best-in-class grant-giving program that is consistent with ICANN's mission.

Goal 11. Take all necessary steps within org's responsibility to support the community to accomplish its dependencies needed to conclude the implementation of the Independent Review Process Standing Panel during this fiscal year.
