Recapping the ICANN Community’s 2021 Achievements Ahead of ICANN73

16 February 2022

The next ICANN Community Forum, ICANN73, will be held 7–10 March 2022. To get ready for the main event, we invite you to participate in ICANN73 Prep Week, which will take place 22–24 February. You can find all necessary information here.

ICANN organization (org) recognizes the challenges many ICANN community members face to participate in the ICANN multistakeholder model, particularly during this time. The org also celebrates the many milestones the ICANN community achieved in 2021.

Policy Development

The Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO) started three important policy development processes (PDPs): the Expedited Policy Development Process on Internationalized Domain Names, the Expedited Policy Development Process on Specific Curative Rights Protections for International Governmental Organizations (IGOs), and the PDP to Review the Transfer Policy. The GNSO Council also worked with the org to initiate the two inaugural Operational Design Phase projects on the System for Standardized Access/Disclosure (SSAD) and the New Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) Subsequent Procedures (SubPro).

The ICANN community submitted several items to the ICANN Board for consideration, concluding significant work efforts. The Country Code Names Supporting Organization (ccNSO) developed a policy on the retirement of country code top-level domains as part of the third ccNSO PDP. The GNSO Council approved final reports from two PDPs: Review of All Rights Protection Mechanisms in All gTLDs and New gTLD SubPro.

Advice

The Governmental Advisory Committee developed new consensus advice for the ICANN Board on the GNSO Expedited Policy Development Process on the Temporary Specification for gTLD Registration Data Phase 2 Final Report during ICANN70, IGO protections during ICANN71, and implementation of the scorecard on the Second Security, Stability, and Resiliency Final Report during ICANN72. The At-Large Advisory Committee contributed to several Public Comment proceedings and provided advice to the ICANN Board regarding the SSAD. The Root Server System Advisory Committee published RSSAC058, outlining success criteria for root server system governance. The Security and Stability Advisory Committee released SAC117, a report on root service early warning systems.

Thank You

It is impossible to adequately measure the impact of the ICANN community. However, the more than 4,500 teleconferences held during 2021 provide a useful snapshot of the tremendous effort. As the ICANN community looks to prioritize its tasks for 2022, the org remains committed to supporting this work. Thank you for the ongoing contributions. The dedication of the ICANN community remains critical to our policy mission.
