4 March 2024

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is pleased to announce Manal Ismail, a long-time member of the ICANN community, as the recipient of the ICANN Community Excellence Award 2024.

A selection panel of representatives from ICANN Supporting Organizations and Advisory Committees recognized Ismail's commitment to ICANN's multistakeholder model and her ability to work with community members from various backgrounds and cultures. ICANN Interim President and CEO Sally Costerton presented the award to Ismail on Monday, 4 March 2024 during the ICANN79 Welcome Ceremony in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The ICANN Community Excellence Award honors members of the ICANN community who have deeply invested in consensus-based solutions and contributed in a substantive way to policymaking within the ICANN ecosystem. Ismail has represented Egypt in the Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC) since 2002. She served as the GAC chair for more than five years from November 2017 through March 2023. Ismail represented the GAC in the IANA Stewardship Transition Coordination Group and was vice chair of the first Accountability and Transparency Review Team. She also served on the Community Excellence Award Selection Panel in 2017.

Ismail participated in the ccNSO Policy Development Process on Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) working group which was tasked to identify a feasible policy for the selection and delegation of IDN country code top-level domain names. The selection panel also commended Ismail's service as a member of ICANN's Arabic script IDN working group.

Ismail is currently the Director of International Technical Coordination at the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Egypt. In addition, Ismail continues to serve as Egypt's GAC representative.

ICANN's mission is to help ensure a stable, secure, and unified global Internet. To reach another person on the Internet, you need to type an address – a name or a number – into your computer or other device. That address must be unique so computers know where to find each other. ICANN helps coordinate and support these unique identifiers across the world. ICANN was formed in 1998 as a nonprofit public benefit corporation with a community of participants from all over the world.
