Translations
Welcome to ICANN's translations page. It outlines all the documents currently going through translation within the organisation. It is a work in progress - so it is not yet complete. There are several documents that are either in translation or have been translated that do not yet appear on this page. From 1 October, links to translated documents will be provided in the "view doc" column as soon as they are published. The job of locating previous translations and linking to them is one that will be undertaken over time; a decision was made to put up a translations page before that process was complete in order to start providing the community with information as soon as possible.
As the tables below show, the translation process contains several steps. First a request by an ICANN staff member is put through to ICANN's translation team for a particular documents to be translated into certain languages. When the document returns from the selected translator, it is then passed onto one or several "checkers" who are individuals well versed in ICANN's work, in order to provide the necessary technical accuracy. When received from the checker, the document is then prepared for publication.
The translation process is currently undergoing reform as ICANN prepares to provide a far greater number of documents in different languages to the community. ICANN's translation principles will be turned into a translation policy following recommendations from an expert consultant that ICANN has advertised for. In the meantime, the work of ICANN translations team can be reviewed on the public participation site. ICANN uses ISO standards 693-1 and 693-2 to denote individual languages. The most common codes are given below:
