The Joint Project Agreement (JPA) is between the United States government and ICANN for the purpose of transitioning the Internet domain name and addressing system to a private sector multi-stakeholder model of leadership. This agreement is in the process of a mid-term review for which the NTIA is currently receiving comments. ICANN urges all interested parties to review the documents ICANN has submitted in response to this review.
On Thursday 28 February, the Department of Commerce held a public meeting for further face to face input in Washington DC. See the list of panelists and a transcript [pdf] of the session. ICANN Chairman Peter Dengate Thrush provided an address at the meeting, and a statement was produced by the NTIA regarding the review on 2 Apr.
40th country code registry agreement signed ICANN has signed its 40th accountability framework with the country code manager for Iceland's ".is", joining another 55 countries that have formalized their relationship.
There are two types of agreement ICANN reaches with those running country top-level domains across the world: accountability frameworks and exchange of letters.
The former include obligations, dispute resolution and termination clauses to the exchange of letters' base commitments that cover how the manager and ICANN will work together to maintain the security and interoperability of the Internet (more info).
As well as agreements with ccTLD managers, ICANN has agreements with other key Internet infrastructure groups, most recently with the Internet Systems Consortium (ISC), the organisation responsible for the operation of the F-root nameserver.
You can view all the agreements ICANN has with country-code managers as a list, or on an interactive map.
Accountability: you want it, you got it If you are interested in the various mechanisms by which ICANN remains accountable, and way in which we make our processes transparent, please review the Frameworks and Principles on Accountability and Transparency [pdf].
The issue of further improving accountability will also be a topic of discussion over the course of 2008, in relation to the conclusion of the Joint Project Agreement (see above). With respect to that there is a "Next Steps" document (more info).
