TLD Correspondence

Intellectual
Property Claims
Over the past several months, participants
in the ICANN process have been discussing the establishment of
new top-level domains (TLDs). On 16 July 2000, the ICANN Board
of Directors adopted a recommendation of the ICANN Domain Name
Supporting Organization under which ICANN is receiving proposals
to establish various new TLDs. The goal is to make selections
from among the applications at the November 2000 ICANN annual
meeting, followed by contractual discussions between ICANN and
selected applicants. At least some new TLDs could become operational
in the first half of the year 2000.
Recently ICANN has received correspondence
from various parties asserting that establishment of particular
TLDs would infringe their claimed intellectual property rights.
To promote the openness and transparency of the selection process,
this correspondence and ICANN's responses are posted below.
