Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC) Review

Background
In accordance with Article XI, Section 2 of the Bylaws, the role of the Security and Stability Advisory Committee (SSAC) is to advise the ICANN community and Board on matters relating to the security and integrity of the Internet's naming and address allocation systems. This includes operational matters (e.g., matters pertaining to the correct and reliable operation of the root name system), administrative matters (e.g., matters pertaining to address allocation and Internet number assignment), and registration matters (e.g., matters pertaining to registry and registrar services such as WHOIS). SSAC engages in ongoing threat assessment and risk analysis of the Internet naming and address allocation services to assess where the principal threats to stability and security lie, and advises the ICANN community accordingly.

| November 2010 – December 2010 | The proposed Bylaw amendments are posted for public comment. | |||||
| October 2010 | The Structural Improvements Committee recommends that the Bylaws should be amended to achieve the recommendation of the Working Group on improvements to the SSAC. | |||||
| March 2010 – June 2010 | In March, the Board of Directors resolves to receive the SSAC Review WG Final Report and instructs the Structural Improvements Committee (SIC) – at the Brussels meeting - to provide an implementation plan in coordination with staff. See Adopted Resolutions. | |||||
| January 2009 | The SSAC review WG publishes its final report (English [PDF, 284 KB]) pending Board decision:

| September 2009 | The SSAC review WG engages in an extensive round of consultations with the SSAC community – which released a structured document providing inputs to the work of the WG – and publishes its draft report (English [PDF, 208 KB]):
The WG solicits input from the ICANN community via a public comment period. |

| May 2009 | JAS communications issues its Final Report (English [PDF, 7.50 MB]) in light of input received from the community. A public comment period is launched and a summary of contributions provided. | |||||
