Beau Brendler is director of Consumer Reports WebWatch at Consumers Union, the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports magazine. WebWatch seeks to improve Web site content through investigation, informing the public, and establishing best-practices criteria for Web publishers. WebWatch initiatives have signed more than 300 organizations, among them many of the world's prominent companies, to abide by credibility and transparency standards. WebWatch's work has made significant impact for the consumer's benefit on health, search, travel, shopping, and many other types of Web sites. WebWatch helped start up and serves as adviser to StopBadware.org at Harvard University's Berkman Center. WebWatch is also a member of the W3C Consortium and the Internet Society. Brendler, a veteran journalist, founded WebWatch in 2001 with almost $5 million in funding from The Pew Charitable Trusts and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. He joined Consumers Union from ABC News, where he was editorial director and founder of ABCNews.com in New York City. He held senior editorial positions at the Washington Post and National Journal, and began his journalism career in Anchorage, Alaska at the daily Times newspaper. He lives in Patterson, New York with his wife Priscilla, executive director of a Connecticut non-profit organization, and children Olivia and Alexander.
